Gretchen Troop, photographer
Hello! I’m Gretchen Troop, a wedding and portrait photographer living in Boulder, Colorado (about 30 minutes west of Denver). Thanks for checking out some of my work here on my website!
My Photography History:
Photography has been a long and interesting journey for me. I earned a degree in Studio Photography from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School. The degree should have lead me to New York City, photographing magazine covers, but instead I ended up in a career as a singer. When I moved to Colorado in 2003 I re-ignited my love of photography and began a career in landscape and music photography. I sold many landscape photos to individuals and businesses and also worked as the primary photographer for a large music festival. A music fan familiar with my photography hired me to photograph his daughter’s wedding in Grand Junction in 2012 and my career in wedding photography began. I had already been photographing musicians for album covers and promotion, but once I started photographing weddings, I began to really dig into off-camera lighting and obtain higher-end equipment to bring my skills to the level necessary to photograph weddings.

My Photography Style:
I photographed my first wedding in 2012 in Grand Junction, Colorado. My wedding and portrait photography has always been inspired by the surrounding landscape. Some of my favorite places to shoot weddings offer world-class views and are a quick jaunt from my house. My favorite location is Estes Park on the border of Rocky Mountain National Park. During the summer I am there almost every week. Because I have photographed so many weddings, engagements and portraits in Estes and RMNP, there are lots of great locations in my tool belt. Many of my clients come from out-of-town and find my familiarity with the area extremely valuable.
My actual photographic “style” is to deliver photographs that fit you and your style. My editing is true to life (although maybe through some polarized sunglasses). Whether the style you are looking for is elegant and classic, edgy and colorful, soft and feminine, Colorado burnt grass, high-end, luxury, they are all in my palette. Photography is what I love, and my capacity to intuitively understand my clients and their vibe is one of the things I get complimented on the most.
Which leads me to the most important factor in my photography business…. YOU. Customer service is always the top priority when you hire Gretchen Troop Photography. I am a proven professional with all the equipment and skills to create stunning photos. But more importantly, I’m fun to work with! Whether you feel uncomfortable in front of the camera or can nail 20 poses in 2 minutes I can capture the “real you” and have you relaxed in front of the camera. You will enjoy your time getting photos… because it is fun!
There is so much more about my photography that I would love to share but the most important message I can leave you with is this, I got you. If it’s raining, we are going to do some amazing backlit colored rain shots, if you just want candids and don’t want to know I’m even there I got you… well except I’m 6 feet tall, so I am a little harder to hide. Whatever the weather, schedule changes or events happen at your wedding or shoot, I will adapt and mix in seamlessly, and the end results will blow you away. I am here to provide you with your ideal photographs, and for you to have a wonderful time while we create them. Make sure to read the Testimonials on the bottom of the page to hear directly from previous clients.

My Other Arts & Passions:
I’m a multi-discipline artist based in Colorado. After college I worked as a professional lead singer writing and performing original soul~funk music in both New York City and San Francisco. When I gave up on my music career in 2003 to move to Colorado, I surprisingly ended up in two more bands before calling it quits (professionally anyway) in 2018 to fully focus on my photography career.
I’m an avid bicyclist, which was one of the larger influences in me moving to Boulder for the town’s outstanding bicycle paths. In 2021 I rode 1,770 miles on mostly dirt (and sometimes snow) paths that wind around the plains. I am also, ironically, the daughter of a race car driver and grew up at sports car tracks in the East Coast. I’ve raced (and photographed) Colorado Rallycross. You can check out some of my car photography here.
Outside of photography I also have a business in motion design, edit video and make 3D & 2D animations and create websites.
I live with my brilliant scientist husband who I adore, and a very weird cat named Monk (as in Thelonious). My husband and I kayak on multi-day camping trips down the Colorado River, as well as camp throughout Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, California and Arizona. Our style of camping is walk-in tent glamping. Our relationship is based on our love of nature and traveling and we try to do as much of it as possible since we first met at Conundrum Hot Springs.
I’m also a music junkie and have been a DJ on KGNU’s Dusty Grooves for over 12 years spinning soul~funk music for the masses.
